The CCCEU's comments on TikTok "divest-or-ban" bill
March 22, 2024, Brussels
On April 22, 2024, the chamber received a media request from Politico regarding the potential U.S. bill to compel ByteDance to divest from TikTok or face a ban on the app in the country. Here is the CCCEU's response to the journalist's inquiries.
Q
Politico:
What does the CCCEU think about that? Do you have a comment about how Europe should react to the U.S. proposal, especially ahead of EU Parliament elections? Has the CCCEU reached out to European politicians about the US bill? If so, what institutions, when and why?
A
The CCCEU:
China Chamber of Commerce to the EU (CCCEU) actively advocates for the interests of Chinese enterprises operating in Europe. TikTok, renowned for its innovative and captivating technology, has gained widespread popularity among European and global audiences, particularly among younger demographics. In response to potential certain legislation that would require ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban in the country, both China's Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Commerce have consistently stressed the importance of upholding market principles and ensuring fair competition in international trade.
The CCCEU urges the EU not to replicate actions that could lead to an unfair business environment, but rather to actively promote fairness and non-discrimination for non-EU companies. It's worth noting that certain EU politicians have embraced platforms like TikTok to directly engage with European constituents, demonstrating the importance of technology in modern political communication. We firmly believe that the EU's interests are best served by keeping business matters separate from political influence and maintaining a focus on equitable practices.
The chamber has not reached out to any European politicians regarding the US bill.
